Hot August Mountain Maternity Portraits...actually |Mountain Maternity Photographer | Banff, Alberta | Lace & Locket Photo

This session took place at the very end of summer, during the Labour Day weekend. Before everyone went back to school and work after fun in the sun, we headed to Banff for a Mountain Maternity Session. It was so hot this day, and I mean, look at this mama. She’s hot too. Her hair and makeup was done by S.Kay Makeup artistry, my in-house makeup artist for Lace & Locket Photo!

All gowns featured in this session are available in my client closet, for booked clients.
All mountain maternity sessions include professional hair and makeup.

This girl is a fire. She’s a force and it radiates through her into the world, through her, her kids. She’s a stunner. She is a beautiful mother, wife and she is one of the strongest women I’ve ever met. I was beyond honored to take her photos on the first day of Spring, march 2020. I know it doesn’t look like that, of course. But it was a stunning day. When Jess told me she wanted me to do her photos, we both had a vision in our minds that was so similar and it all came together beautifully. I had a gown custom made specifically for Jess’ sessions (you can find the talented maker here) and her hair and makeup was provided by the exceptional S.Kay Makeup Artistry.

First off, know that M’s mountain maternity session took place IN MAY. The first weekend of May, but still. Welcome to Alberta, I guess. M was getting her makeup done by none other than the talented Sarah of S.Kay Makeup Artistry, our resident Calgary Makeup Artist, and I was driving out to Banff to make sure all my spots were looking tip top, and to check to see if the lakes were fully thawed or not. I wasn’t even off 16th Ave yet and it turned into a whiteout. Snow, slush, sleet coming down, my windshield wipers couldn’t keep up.
Then it stopped.
Then the sun came out.
Then it started to rain and snow while the sun was shining down.
What. Is. Going. On.
Oh, you know. Just Alberta weather. I knew that M was coming somewhere behind me, driving through every single season as well, and probably having the same little heart attacks that I was with every shift in weather.

I got to Canmore, couldn’t see the mountains. I was worried… but as SOON as I got past the Banff National Park gate, it was like magic. The clouds parted, the blue sky and sun were shining bright and I could see all my favourite mountains. EXCELLENT.

It lasted long enough to get a handful of family shots…

Of course once we got into the gowns, things started to shift again. Suddenly clouds dropped, it got windy, and cold, and started to rain, hard! We were able to get these shots before we had to run for cover in the car!

SURE ENOUGH another storm passed over us, NO VISIBILITY - AGAIN. We persevered. We waited 10 minutes, and the storm passed. The sunset sky that the universe gave us for the rest of her session….was BREATHTAKING.

I have to say that I absolutely LOVE when the mountains still have snow on them, I think they’re stunning. Like wearing their Sunday best, or their best dress out on the town. There is still snow on the ground in some of these images, despite it being May, we were just on the cusp of the snow melting and Summer taking over.

Of course, just because there’s no snow in one spot we photograph in, doesn’t mean that 500 feet away there isn’t full on Winter just hanging out. I love these spots I use because they all have the ability to offer completely different variations of backdrops to your photos - adding in different gowns in different colours, fits and seasons, and it’s easy to make total magic!

Summer Mountain Maternity Session | Lace & Locket Photo | Banff, Alberta, Canada | Calgary Mountain Maternity Photographer

Tealyn came to me with her first babe back in 2018 when we did her first maternity session at the gorgeous Saskatoon Farm just south of Calgary. I try to plan Spring garden greenhouse maternity specials each year if it works out and these were the first ones that I had done! It was hot, beautiful and so much fun! I had hired a makeup artist to work with that day and do these ladies’ makeup and make them feel like queens! It was such a perfect day.

Right off the bat we did a set of photos with their sweet toddler because as we all know, they don’t like to hang out for long! She was shy at first but warmed right up!

Two years later we chose to do Tealyn’s session in the mountains and I had a very specific vision for it. Tealyn got her hair & makeup done by the incredible Sarah with S.Kay Makeup Artistry. As if her first session wasn’t perfect enough we created some absolute magic that day as well. We did two locations close together because if you’re driving an hour out, I want to make sure that you are having an incredible experience AND a good variety in your maternity session.

Next we focused on Mama and made her feel like a Q U E E N . The contrast of her gorgeous red hair against a white gown and the gorgeous mountain backdrop was exactly what I had envisioned when I was thinking up her session. Tealyn gave both the makeup artist and myself full creative reign which is always so much fun!

Next we went just up the road for a little bit of a change in scenery. When choosing locations for maternity sessions I make sure of two things : It’s easy terrain for a pregnant person and not far from where we park so that if a client needs to take a break, warm up, cool down, sit for a few minutes, EAT A SNACK, we are not far from all of those things; AND TWO there is another view or element close by to be able to give a good set of variety in the client’s gallery. This is definitely one of those spots.
